STOCKTON, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension livestock field specialist Patrick Davis says backyard poultry production is increasingly integrated into family lifestyles.
This small-scale poultry production serves both as a food source and income stream for families, Davis says. MU Extension, in collaboration with Lincoln University Cooperative Extension, who host a Backyard Laying Hen Workshop 1-5 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the MU Extension Center in Barton County, 801 E. 12th St., Lamar.
“This workshop is designed for both experienced and novice small-scale poultry producers,” says Heather Conrow, MU Extension livestock field specialist. Conrow will collaborate with Tatijana Fisher, Lincoln University state extension poultry specialist, to discuss basic management practices to maintain a healthy backyard flock. The workshop will also cover biosecurity, licensing and labeling requirements, processing, and washing and grading eggs. Participants will have hands-on opportunities to engage in equipment demonstrations and processing, candling and grading of eggs.
“Whether you have a small number of chickens in your backyard or operate a thriving egg business at a farmers market, there is valuable information for everyone,” says Fisher. Conrow recommends youth participation: “We highly encourage the younger generations to get involved in these kinds of projects.”
