Genetic Lockbox

Genetic Lockboxes officially launched on National DNA Day in April 2024. The activity consists of genetically focused puzzles participants solve to obtain the combinations to the various locks on the box.

Genetic Lockboxes are an innovative and interactive means to educate the public about genetics. Participants exercise communication techniques as they work together to solve the puzzles. The puzzles are designed to make participants think through and apply problem-solving skills to genetic concepts. Participants will struggle, make mistakes, and rely on teammates.

With the support of Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, 24 Genetic Lockboxes with supporting materials have been distributed across the state, with an additional 40 coming soon.

"With Genetic Lockbox, communities learn about a complex biological topic through fun, engaging puzzles. These different challenges encourage youth and adults to use multiple skills – word recognition, vocabulary, visual understanding, and application – to solve each puzzle. The Genetic Lockbox is also a great way for teams to work together, while learning, in order to successfully solve each puzzle and open the box."
